Targeted, minimally invasive treatment for pre-cancers, sun damage, and acne.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), also known as Blue Light Therapy, is an advanced treatment that uses a photosensitizing agent and a specific wavelength of light to selectively destroy abnormal or precancerous skin cells while leaving surrounding healthy tissue intact. It is FDA-approved for actinic keratoses (pre-cancers) and widely used for sun-damaged skin, superficial skin cancers, and acne. PDT is particularly valuable for treating large areas of sun-damaged skin with minimal scarring and excellent cosmetic results — avoiding the need for surgery in many cases.

- Actinic keratoses (pre-cancers) — the most common indication
- Sun-damaged skin and field cancerization (large areas of extensive sun damage)
- Superficial basal cell carcinoma
- Acne vulgaris (moderate to severe)
- Photorejuvenation — overall skin texture and tone improvement
- Bowen’s disease (squamous cell carcinoma in situ)
Your PDT Treatment — Step by Step
Skin Preparation
The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed, and the photosensitizing
agent (5-ALA) is applied to the skin surface.
Incubation Period
The agent absorbs into the skin for a defined period, ensuring
selective uptake by precancerous and abnormal cells.
Light Activation
The treated area is exposed to blue or red light, activating the
photosensitizer to produce reactive oxygen species that destroy
targeted abnormal cells.
Recovery
Expect redness and sensitivity for a few days. Strict sun avoidance
is required for 48 hours after treatment. You may experience peeling
and crusting as abnormal cells shed — do not pick.
Follow-Up
A series of treatments may be recommended for optimal results.

PDT is performed as an outpatient procedure at our Hendersonville office — no surgery, no general anesthesia.
It avoids damaging the normal skin in the treatment area, providing better cosmetic outcomes compared to some surgical options, especially for large areas of sun-damaged skin.
