Identify the cause of your chronic rash with comprehensive allergen testing — usually covered by insurance.
Allergic contact dermatitis is a skin reaction caused by direct contact with substances to which you are allergic — causing the skin to become itchy, cracked, red, sore, and sometimes blistered. Allergens can include ingredients in shampoo, soap, makeup, fragrance, jewelry, medication, cleaning supplies, latex gloves, and many more. While allergic contact dermatitis cannot be cured, it can be well-controlled once you identify and avoid the culprit allergen.
Patch testing is a reliable, safe, and easy way to identify specific substances causing your skin inflammation. It tests for a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction — different from the immediate “prick test” reactions tested by allergists. We perform a comprehensive patch test of the top 80–90 allergens responsible for the majority of allergic rashes. The testing consists of eight patches (approximately 2×4 inches in size) carefully taped to your back.

3-Visit Appointment Schedule
1
Mon or Tue — Application Visit
Eight patch trays are carefully taped to your back and contain
approximately 80–90 allergens. The patches must remain in place and
stay completely dry for 48 hours.
2
Wed or Thu — Reading Visit
The patch trays are removed. We verify proper contact with the skin
and evaluate for any immediate irritation or reaction patterns.
3
Mon or Fri — Final Interpretation
Allergic reactions are identified and correlated with your rash. You
will receive a comprehensive allergen report along with a list of
safe products to use moving forward.
BEFORE YOUR TEST — STRICT INSTRUCTIONS
- Shower the night before your first visit — do NOT shower the morning of testing
- You will NOT be able to get your back wet during the entire week of testing — no swimming, saunas, or excessive sweating. Plan accordingly.
- Do NOT use creams, lotions, or moisturizers on your back for 3 days before testing
- STOP using any prescription topical medications (especially topical steroids) on your back at least 2 weeks before testing
- If you have a hairy back, shave 2 days before testing — do NOT shave within 24 hours of testing (skin irritation will affect results)
- Avoid sun exposure on your back for 2 weeks before testing
- Tell us if you are on any medications that suppress your immune system (prednisone, methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporin, Dupixent, JAK inhibitors)
- Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra) are fine to continue during testing
- Wear an old shirt between visits 2 and 3 — marking pens are used on your back and may transfer to clothing
- Bring specific products you suspect to your final visit if applicable
